Performance Saddle Pads
The pad between your saddle and your horse's back does far more than look good — it manages pressure, wicks sweat, and keeps the saddle from rocking. The right performance pad can be the difference between a sound, willing horse and a sore, cinchy one.
What Riders Are Actually Asking
Wool, felt, fleece, or neoprene — which is best?
Natural wool felt is the gold standard for serious work: it wicks, breathes, and spreads pressure under a hard-working saddle. Fleece tops add cushion and a clean look; neoprene bottoms grip and won't slip but run hotter. Many performance pads layer wool against the back with a built-up wear leather at the cinch.
Do I need a contoured or barrel pad?
A contoured (CSI-style) or built-up pad follows the topline so it doesn't bridge or create pressure points. Barrel and racing pads are cut shorter and lighter to stay out of the way at speed.
How thick should it be?
Thicker isn't automatically better — too much pad changes saddle fit. Use enough to cushion and wick without lifting the saddle off the horse. If your saddle fits well, a 3/4" to 1" wool pad is a common sweet spot.
How do I keep it from slipping?
Wool and felt grip naturally, and a clean, dry pad slips far less than a sweat-caked one. Brush it out and let it dry fully between rides.
How to Choose the Right Pad
- Start with saddle fit: a pad corrects minor gaps, not a poorly fitting tree.
- Pick the material for the job: wool felt for hard work and heat, fleece for cushion and looks.
- Match the cut: contoured for high-withered or hard-working horses, square for everyday Western, barrel for speed.
- Protect the wear zone: a leather cinch-area patch makes a pad last for years.
