Performance Boots

Hard stops, tight turns, and long miles all drive concussion straight into your horse's legs. Performance boots are how you protect the tendons, ligaments, and splint bones doing that work — whether you're running barrels, roping, reining, or just asking for a real day on the trail.

What Riders Are Actually Asking

Do my horse's legs really need boots?

If your horse works at speed, stops hard, or interferes (clips one leg with another), yes. Sport medicine boots like the Professional's Choice 2XCool SMB and Classic Equine Legacy2 cradle the suspensory and support the fetlock through hard stops, while splint and brushing boots guard the cannon bone from strike injuries.

What's the difference between bell boots and sport boots?

Sport (SMB) boots wrap the cannon and fetlock to absorb concussion and prevent strike. Bell boots sit over the hoof and bulb to stop a hind toe from grabbing a front heel or pulling a shoe. Many riders run both — sport boots up top, bell boots below — for full coverage.

Neoprene or breathable — does it matter?

For repeated hard work, look for ventilated or "cool" materials (perforated neoprene, air-flow liners) that shed heat. Tendons are sensitive to it; the cooler the leg stays, the better it holds up over a long run.

What are skid boots for?

Reiners and ropers use skid boots to protect the hind fetlocks from burn during sliding stops. If your horse sits down hard, they aren't optional.

How to Choose the Right Boots

  • Match the job: SMB/sport boots for speed and stops, splint/brushing for interference, bell for overreach, skid for sliding stops.
  • Fit snug, not tight: a boot that slips collects grit and rubs; one too tight restricts. Aim to slide a finger under a fastened boot.
  • Buy the set: front-and-rear 4-packs keep protection even and usually save money.
  • Clean them: rinse sand and grit after rides — embedded dirt is what causes rubs.
