The dog that supervises every barn chore earns a real winter coat — not a costume that rides up, but something that keeps a working dog warm, dry and visible from the first frost through mud season. Every coat, sweater and pair of pajamas on this page is in stock and sized from toy breeds to barn-patrol size, picked from the brands we actually sell day to day.
What dog owners are actually asking
The searches that bring people here are specific: full body winter dog coat, waterproof dog coat with underbelly protection, winter coat for a short-haired dog, something reflective for dark evening walks. The short answers: a full-body suit like the Ruffin It snow suit beats a cape-style coat for short-haired and small dogs because it closes under the belly where the cold actually gets in; waterproof shell plus fleece lining is the right combination for wet-cold climates; and if you walk before sunrise or after sunset — which in winter is most of us — high-visibility matters as much as warmth.
How to choose from this page
Cold and wet, outside a lot: the Doggie Design Alpine All-Weather Parka — waterproof shell, fleece lining, leash opening — or the Ruffin It Snow Suit when you need legs and belly covered on a short-coated dog. Dark barn mornings: the Shires Equi-Flector reflective coat is the one drivers see from a quarter mile. Indoor chill and senior dogs: the Sweet Dreams thermal pajamas and the acrylic-knit Rudolph sweater hold warmth without a shell's stiffness. Everyday crisp-morning layer: the Lovewally cotton-blend hoodies in navy or grey are the put-it-on-and-forget-it option. The stylish one at the tailgate: Shires' Digby & Fox tweed — a proper checkered wool-look topcoat.
Getting the size right
Measure back length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, then chest girth at the widest point behind the front legs. Between sizes, size up — a coat that binds at the chest stays in the closet. Full-body suits need the back-leg measurement too; each product page lists its own chart because a Doggie Design medium and a Shires medium are not the same dog.
What this page is not for
This is winter warmth only. For life jackets and water work, see the Weaver Terrain swim vest on our Dog Apparel & Accessories page; for harnesses, collars and leads, start there too. Holiday-specific shirts and costumes live in our seasonal collections, and the barn-dog gift kits — hoodie-and-toy or pajamas-and-collar-light sets about 10% under separates — are in Fall Bundles.
Winter dog coat FAQs
Does my dog actually need a coat? Short-haired breeds, seniors, small dogs and anything under 20 lbs lose heat fast below about 45°F; double-coated northern breeds mostly don't. If your dog shivers, tucks or refuses to go out, that's the answer.
What's the difference between a parka and a snow suit? A parka covers back and chest; a snow suit adds legs and belly. For deep cold, snow, or a dog built low to the ground, the full-body suit wins.
Can a dog wear a coat in the rain? Only a waterproof shell like the Alpine parka or Equi-Flector — a soaked sweater is colder than no sweater. Save knits and hoodies for dry cold.
How do I wash these? Shell coats rinse and air-dry; knits, hoodies and pajamas machine-wash cold on gentle. Details on each product page.
Do you ship free? Yes — free shipping, no minimum, with same-day dispatch by 1PM PST.
Cold snaps sell out small sizes first every year. If the right size is in stock today, that's the day to get it.
