A horse cooler doesn't cool your horse. It does the opposite: it wicks sweat off a warm, wet coat after work so the horse dries without getting chilled. Riders mix up coolers, anti-sweat sheets and summer cooling blankets all the time, and buying the wrong one leaves a horse standing damp in a cold barn. This page sorts them out.

What Riders Are Actually Asking

Is an anti-sweat sheet just a cooler?

Close to it. An anti-sweat sheet is usually an open mesh or scrim that traps a layer of air while the horse dries, while a fleece cooler pulls moisture into the fabric. Both do the same job after work, so many riders own one of each.

Can a horse stand in a cooler overnight?

Not usually. A cooler is for the drying window after exercise or a bath. Once the coat is dry, take it off and blanket for the weather, or the damp fabric starts working against you.

Fleece or wicking fabric?

Fleece is warmer and suits cold barns. Technical wicking coolers like the Toklat Bucas Power Cooler and Shires Tempest Ultra Drying Rug dry faster and are lighter to wash.

Can I put a blanket over a cooler?

Some coolers are made to be layered under a turnout or stable blanket so moisture can pass through. Check the product page, because a fleece cooler under a waterproof turnout traps the sweat you wanted gone.

What is the difference between a cooler and a cooling blanket?

A cooling blanket, such as the Weaver CoolAid, is wetted and worn in hot weather to bring a horse's temperature down. A cooler is for drying a sweaty horse in cool weather. They are opposites.

How to Choose the Right Horse Cooler

  • Fleece for cold barns: Professional's Choice and Weaver Leather fleece coolers hold warmth while the horse dries.
  • Mesh for mild weather: The Shires Tempest fleece and mesh cooler dries a horse without overheating it.
  • Wicking fabric for fast drying: Toklat Bucas Power Coolers wick moisture away fast and wash easily.
  • Windproof for shows and trailering: The Professional's Choice softshell cooler blocks a cold wind at the trailer.
  • Therapy plus drying: Back On Track coolers add the brand's ceramic Welltex fabric for horses in hard work.

What This Page Is Not For

This page isn't for summer cooling. If you want to bring a hot horse's temperature down, you need a cooling blanket that is wetted before use, not a cooler.

Brands Riders Trust

Back On Track, Shires, Professional's Choice, Weaver Leather and Toklat (Bucas) are the cooler brands riders name most often, and we limit each to two places on this page so you can compare fabrics rather than one brand's range.

Family run since 1994, Hooves & Paws backs every cooler with a 365-day guarantee.
